Sessions will cover rigging, lighting and electrical, lighting networking, and safety. The rigging track will feature sessions on topics such as rigging math, working at height, rescue scenario training, and load-testing. The safety track will again offer the popular two-day I.A.T.S.E. OSHA 10 course on Saturday and Sunday, January 26th and 27th. A full schedule of classes will be published next month.

Helping Protect Your Certification on State Level
ESTA/ETCP has just joined the newly formed Professional Certification Coalition (PCC) which will address efforts to enact state legislation that would undermine the activities or recognition of certifications developed or offered by non-governmental, private certification organizations such as ETCP.
Recent occupational licensing reform legislation considered in various states has alerted private certification organizations to significant threats to their activities. These bills have included provisions that would bar many professionals holding certifications from private organizations from using the titles “certified” or “registered,” and could establish governmental certification programs that would supplant private certification programs, in some circumstances.
You have worked hard to gain your certification by demonstrating your knowledge, skills and abilities, and this could prohibit you from using it to show your qualifications and promote your services. Should draft legislation arise in your state regarding this issue, we will reach out to you to enlist your help in protecting your certification(s).

About New PPDT Eligibility Requirements
After an extensive survey of stakeholders, employers, and subject matter experts, it was determined that candidates could acquire the foundational knowledge and skills to qualify to sit for the Portable Power Distribution Technician examination with a less stringent work requirement. Effective immediately, the ETCP Certification Council has lowered the eligibility requirements for candidates applying to take the PPDT examination to 20 points from the original 25 points.
These points may be garnered through work experience alone, or can be comprised of work experience plus any of the following: training (i.e. apprenticeships or internships), licensures, and/or degrees from accredited institutions. Courses taken outside a formal program of undergraduate or graduate studies do not count towards eligibility.
The ETCP PPDT Certification is focused on a large population of industry workers in the roles of lighting technicians, stagehands, portable power/strike technicians, as well as facility maintenance personnel for a wide variety of venues. This certification targets the top two-thirds of people working with this technology at various types of facilities in the corporate, trade show, outdoor event, theatrical and motion picture/television segments of the entertainment industry.

As entertainment technology continues to evolve, continuing professional development and education are essential. That is why you must accumulate the necessary renewal credits to recertify.
What should I be thinking about after I become certified?
Your certification is good for five years from the date you passed the exam. During that time, you should be working on accumulating work and education to submit when your recertification is due. It is very important not to wait until the last minute!
How many points do I need to recertify?
When should I recertify?
As soon as you have the credits if you would like to get it out of the way. Technically, your recertification materials should be into your faithful Certification Manager 8 weeks before your due date, she will accept it up to the due date, but those who come down to the wire make her a little cranky. If you miss your deadline, you need to send an email to etcp@esta.org addressed to the Appeals Committee explaining the following:
1. What circumstances kept you from recertifying on time.
2. Whether or not you will need an extension to satisfy your recertification requirements. If you are requesting an extension, please be specific.
If the Appeal is granted, then you will need to make arrangements with Meredith for the extension.

You need to provide work experience (at least 30 points) and educational experience (at least 10 points) along with payment to ETCP. The forms are under the “Get Certified” button on the ETCP home page. The forms are available for you here as well:

LRLR Raises over $700,000 for Charity

The Long Reach Long Riders (LRLR) community came together again for the 2018 Ramble through New England. Community? Yeah. After riding on my sixth ride (the LRLR’s 15th!) it became clear the Long Reach Long Riders were in fact, a community. An intentional community organized for the sake of a larger community. A group of motorcyclists from all different parts of the country (and world!) that come together for the sake of brothers and sisters in the entertainment technology industry who are ill or injured and have fallen on hard times. Who knew that doing something good for someone else could be so much fun? The scenery (and the challenges!) of the gaps and notches, as well as the mountain summits and winding riverside roads filled each day with moments for which we could only be grateful. The positivity of this rolling community is endemic enough such that each rider happily gives a week or two of their year plus covering all of their own expenses, so that each dollar donated goes to the people that need it most. The contagious camaraderie of this motley horde brings people back year after year to reconnect with old friends, to make new ones, to share belly-aching laughs, swap stories, and support each other. Why each one of us rides is as individual as we are. Some ride to give back, some ride to have some quiet time, some ride to see the country, some ride because they need the community, but all of us ride because we know that together we can make a difference that is greater than what any one of us could otherwise do.

This year’s ride raised over $54,000 (and still coming in) and over our 15 years we are approaching $700,000 for Behind the Scenes and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. Bill Sapsis was Ride Marshall this year with much support from the “Jims” (Jim Niesel and Jim Dougherty), Deborah Butt, Lori Rubinstein, and Frances thompson. Special thanks go to our terrific chase vehicle support: Joe and Sherry Aldridge and Bill and Jocelyn ellis. the 2019 LRLR community get-together will be in colorado with a date likely in early July. Jon Kirchhofer will be the Ride Marshal who promises we will see new heights!
