Richard Cadena is an ETCP Certified Entertainment Electrician and an ETCP Recognized Trainer with 31 years of experience in the entertainment lighting industry. Since 1986, it’s Gravitec’s mission to protect the lives and livelihoods of those who work at heights by providing a full range of high-quality fall protection services worldwide including training, engineering, consulting, testing, and technical equipment sales.

Gravitec’s Fall Protection Train the Trainer Program is a 40-hour course which provides student trainers with the technical knowledge and resource materials necessary to deliver professional, in-house fall protection and rescue training. Student Trainers are expected to have previous experience using active fall protection systems.

Gravitec’s Competent Climber and Rescue Course is a 40-hour combination of classroom sessions focused on fall protection theory and practical hands-on exercises for workers using fall protection and rescue equipment in the at heights industry.

Gravitec also offers Refresher Courses as well as industry specific trainer trainings; Theatre and Entertainment for example. With a focus on the Entertainment and Theatrical Industries, the course topics include what skills and knowledge apply to the riggers, truss spot operators, and others in theater who regularly work at heights, utilize scaffolds, and work on other elevated work platforms.

Explains what 3-phase AC power phase sequence is and the impact it has on electric chain hoist control systems. Students learn why phase swaps within the system could result in incorrect operation and possibly hazardous conditions.

Ground Rigging Class (Webinar)

The course is 2 hours with a live instructor. Half the class is slides, videos and a quiz. The instructor will answer any questions you might have. The second half is live demonstrations of equipment handling and rigging Q&A.

Completion of this course will allow you to attend in-person rigging courses at the Bigger Hammer Training Center, including Ground & Up Rigging and how to rig from a MEWP.

Arena Rigging Class (In Person)

Bigger Hammer is providing a monthly rigging training class. Attendees may receive 4 ETCP RENEWAL CREDITS upon completion. Select the date and time you wish to attend. When you receive the reservation email, follow the instructions to remit payment and complete the waiver.

The course cost is $100.

We will cover building and sending steel, making and breaking points, walking beams, rope management, motor control and basic fall protection skills. The exact content will vary to suit the skill level of the attendees. For more advanced students we will cover the job duties of Head Riggers - client interfacing and how to chalk out a rig plot.

All equipment will be provided, including fall protection gear.

Class is limited to 6 people per month to ensure everyone gets enough time to familiarize themselves with the gear and procedures.

This 5-day training program is hands-on rope access and rigging training. Manufacturers’ representatives from Xtreme Structures & Fabrication and Motion Laboratories will also be on hand to teach proper safety and use of truss and motor control systems. Eligible participants can receive 40 points towards the renewal of their ETCP Certification.

Be prepared

This is an intensive hands-on course, so be prepared to get a little dirty. Expect to handle rigging hardware, chain hoists, cabling, and truss throughout the week. You'll be climbing on ropes and using fall protection equipment, so dress comfortably to be in the warehouse. While our shop is heated, it is Chicago in the winter and that means it could be a bit chilly - think long sleeved sweatshirts and layering. We'll provide the harness, helmet, and all other fall protection equipment needed, but please bring your own gloves and be sure to plan on long pants and good work shoes.

Attendance is limited for this event so we can provide a safe training environment following CDC, State of Illinois, and City of Chicago guidance. Daily self-certification will be required and anyone displaying symptoms will not be admitted.

The 2022 New World Rigging Symposium – The Conversation Continues

Registration is now open for the 2022 New World Rigging Symposium, which will take place online April 5-7, 2022. Produced by ESTA and USITT, the NWRS brings together professional riggers, engineers, manufacturers, venue managers, educators and students to further their rigging knowledge, hear about challenging projects, get up to speed on new technologies, discuss current industry challenges, and get their questions answered by a host of subject matter experts.

Make a Difference in 2022 – Become a Mental Health First Aider

Mental Health First Aid Training Classes for February 2022 are posted on the Behind the Scenes website at btshelp.org/mhfa. Do you know how to respond if you see someone who is deeply depressed, having a anxiety attack, or showing signs of alcoholism? Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis.

Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations with someone you are worried about by teaching you how to recognize the signs and symptoms, how to listen non judgmentally and give reassurance, and how to refer that person to appropriate professional support and services.

The course is delivered in two parts. The first is a 2-4 hour self-paced online course that must be completed prior to the second part which is a 6 hour virtual live instructor led session. Upon completing the course you will become a certified Mental Health First Aider which is valid for three years.

The registration fee is $125. IATSE Members and those working under IATSE agreements may be eligible for Training Trust Fund reimbursement upon proof of successful completion of the course. A limited number of partial and full scholarships are available to individuals not eligible for reimbursement. The Long Reach Long Riders and Behind the Scenes will host their annual fundraising raffle at the USITT Conference March 3-5 in Baltimore, MD. This year’s raffle will celebrate the 19th Anniversary of the Long Reach Long Riders annual charity motorcycle ride. The Riders, who have raised over $800,000 for charity in their years of touring, will be riding June 18-24 on the “Blue Ridge Ramble” tour through the Appalachian Mountains.

The Behind the Scenes Boutique will also be open for business during the show featuring an assortment of great Behind the Scenes swag and the famous Long Reach Long Rider T-shirts and kazoos.

Tickets for the raffle are an affordable $5 each or 5 for $20 and can be purchased at the Behind the Scenes booth throughout the show. Winning tickets for nine regular prizes and one grand prize will be drawn at 1pm on Saturday, the final day of Stage Expo.
