Convention Center Cord Sets by Ken Vannice
There is a group of products called “Convention Center Cord Sets”. There are parallel types for use under carpets and booth stringer types that are not. According to UL the cable is marked every 6’ “Parallel (Booth Stringer) Convention Center Cable for Temporary Trade Show Use Only”. The cable assembly is marked Listed Convention Center Cord Set. From this information it is not clear where these cord set are suitable for use. For this reason, I entered into a dialog with the UL PDE for this category.
These cord sets are not suitable for use everywhere in a Convention Center. They are suitable for use only in areas covered by NEC Section 518.3(B) which is in exhibition halls for display booths as in trade shows. They are to be installed in accordance with Article 590, Temporary Installations. They are not suitable for use in areas of convention centers and exhibit halls which are not display booth areas such as theatrical areas, food and drink service areas or meeting areas.
Even though the cable is marked as stated above the cable is never Listed separately. It is not suitable for field assembly of connectors. The modification of Listed cord sets violates the Listing. It is not acceptable to remove and replace connectors.
It is possible for these assemblies to also be Listed as general-use cord sets or be Listed as general-use cord sets only. General-use cord sets are not suitable for under carpet installation because they have not been thermally evaluated under carpet. General-use cord sets are suitable for use in other parts of a convention center.

We have some of these flat cables from Lex, purchased so they can be gaff-taped more neatly (neat and workman like!). Our venue is not a "Trade Show" occupancy, so I'd like to see these listed as general use.
